How to Compress a Video Without Losing Visible Quality
Phone cameras record at bitrates far higher than social platforms and messengers need. A one-minute 4K clip can weigh 400 MB, yet Instagram and TikTok re-encode everything to around 3-6 Mbps anyway. Compressing before you upload saves time and data, and avoids a second, harsher platform re-compression.
Recommended Settings by Platform
| Destination | Resolution | Bitrate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram Reels / TikTok | 1080x1920 | 3.5-6 Mbps | 9:16, 30 fps, under 4 GB |
| YouTube Shorts | 1080x1920 | 5-8 Mbps | Up to 3 minutes |
| WhatsApp / Telegram | 720p | 1.5-2 Mbps | WhatsApp caps at 16 MB on many devices |
| Email / Discord | 540p | ~1 Mbps | Use the target size field for 25 MB |
Why Browser-Based Compression Is Private
Most "online video compressors" upload your file to a server. This tool decodes the video with your browser's own media engine, redraws frames at the new size, and re-encodes them with the MediaRecorder API. The file is never transmitted, so personal footage, family clips and confidential recordings stay on your device.
What Determines File Size
File size is simply bitrate x duration. Halve the bitrate and you halve the size. Lowering resolution lets the encoder spend the same bits on fewer pixels, which often looks better than a high resolution at a starved bitrate. For talking-head and screen content, 720p at 1.5 Mbps is usually indistinguishable on a phone screen.
