What is DPI and Why Does 300 DPI Matter for Printing?

DPI (Dots Per Inch) is the metric used by commercial printers and photo labs to determine how many physical droplets of ink are placed within one linear inch of paper. The higher the DPI, the sharper and more continuous the printed image will appear.

In photographic printing, 300 DPI is universally regarded as the gold standard. The human eye, when viewing a photograph from a normal reading distance of 10 to 12 inches (25–30 cm), cannot resolve individual ink dots at densities of 300 DPI or higher. Printing at lower densities (e.g. below 150 DPI) causes visible pixelation, stair-stepping on diagonal lines, and fuzzy text.

DPI vs PPI: What Is the Real Difference?

When preparing an image for print, your image’s pixel dimensions divided by your target DPI tells you the exact maximum physical print size without upscaling: Width in Inches = Horizontal Pixels / DPI.

The Viewing Distance Rule: Why Billboards Only Need 15 DPI

One of the most common misconceptions in graphic design is that everything must be printed at 300 DPI. In reality, required DPI decreases dramatically as the intended viewing distance increases:

Medium Viewing Distance Ideal DPI Why It Works
Handheld Photo / Art Book 10–12 inches (25–30 cm) 300 DPI Eye can inspect micro-details up close.
Framed Wall Art / Canvas 3–5 feet (1–1.5 meters) 150–200 DPI Canvas texture masks minor resolution drops.
Trade Show Banner 6–10 feet (2–3 meters) 100 DPI Passersby view the overall graphic from a distance.
Highway Billboard 50+ feet (15+ meters) 12–20 DPI Human eye blends dots over hundreds of feet.
